They're smarter than you might think. And organized! The squirrels piled up these black walnuts and pine cones underneath a stand of big fir trees. Where they know the snow won't bury them.
its the only pile too (as far as I know). I think its the red squirrels that are working on it. I've only seen red squirrels on the pile. and there are a whole lot of walnuts left on the ground that they haven't picked up yet.
